Extra Gum: The Story of Sarah & Juan

This new advert caught my attention via Facebook, it was released on the 7th of October 2015 and is an advertisement for Extra Gum. On Facebook this was circulating as being an advert that would reduce you to tears, which for me concretes the idea that emotion sells. It definitely has that emotional pull towards the end and the concept is wonderful. When first watching I felt that the 'connection' between the actors wasn't there which made it feel a little awkward but I kept watching as the song was engaging and I was intrigued as to where the idea was heading. The ending was very good and had a very strong emotional connection with the audience (myself included). However I really dislike that they have used a voice over at the end of the video to say the brand name. It feels so disjointed and just snaps you into reality that this is an advert for gum... which almost spoils that warm fuzzy feeling you just got from this highly romantic narrative.

Although the narrative is not relatable, in the sense that I could count on my hands, how many people have been proposed to via illustrated gum wrappers. Yet it plays on scenarios that many couples can relate to like the first time they met, arguing, being a part for either work or vacation etc. In that sense it has a universal appeal because anyone in a relationship can identify with ups and downs and the idea of a peace offering to make things better again.

I think this advert was defiantly on to something, its clearly targeted at women both in relationships and single with that aspiration of romance and finding the one. What I feel makes it great is that its not too unrealistic they don't just show this whirlwind romance that flows smoothly. Showing times of adversity makes the relationship feel more real and attainable, so therefore more identifiable for the viewer.
